Mainland’s retail site which includes a mini-supermarket with post office and off-licence, petrol pumps and hairdresser is situated approximately one mile from the Old Schoolhouse. It is approximately 22 miles from Lerwick and there is a regular bus service at the junction to the main A970 road.

Dunrossness Primary School is situated not far from Mainlands, older pupils go to Sandwick Junior High School or the Anderson High School in Lerwick. School transport to secondary schools are provided by Shetland Islands Council. The south mainland doctor’s surgery is at Levenwick.
