GENERAL
Fetlar is connected to the adjacent island of Yell by a 25 minute ferry crossing from Hamars Ness to Gutcher. A further regular 20 minute ferry service from Ulsta on Yell runs to Toft on the Shetland mainland. There is an ‘Overland’ bus between the North Isles and Lerwick.
Fetlar is known as ‘The Garden of Shetland’ and has an abundance of wildlife. The Loch of Funzie, less than half a mile from Stanetaft, famously attracts over 90% of the UK’s breeding population of the rare red-necked phalarope. There are also many other varieties of breeding seabirds and waders, including red-throated divers, Arctic skuas and whimbrels.
The population of Fetlar is less than 60. There is a Primary School, shop including post office (open 11am to 1pm everyday except Thursday and Sunday), community hall, youth club, camping böd, church and the Byre Chapel which is run by Anglican nuns. A nurse is based on the isle and a doctor visits once a fortnight. The Fetlar Interpretive Centre which is a community run museum and visitor centre provides local history and wildlife displays.
This would be an ideal retreat for someone wanting to “get away from it all” or to enjoy the outdoors.
The cottage is a storey and a half with a single storey extension to the front. Stone built with thick walls and thought to be over 100 years old. All windows are double glazed and heating is off peak electric storage heaters and there is a multi fuel stove in the Livingroom. The property is in move-into condition. The owner has applied for satellite 2Mbps symmetrical broadband connection as part of a pilot project.
Accommodation is on two levels and comprises:
On the Ground Floor: Lobby, Bathroom, Open Plan Kitchen and Livingroom.
On the First Floor: 2 Bedrooms.
Two outbuildings.
