Mid Yell is the main centre of population on the island and has a shop with Post Office and fuel pumps, junior high school, health centre and leisure centre with heated swimming pool, a public house and a restaurant. Backa is located just a 10 minute drive away. The ro-ro ferries to Unst and Fetlar leave from Gutcher at the north end of the island.
