GENERAL
Yell is the largest of the North Isles, having a population of just under 1000. A subsidised ro-ro ferry crosses from Toft on the Shetland Mainland to Ulsta on the island of Yell on a regular basis throughout the day, taking 15 minutes. Westerhouse is approximately 15.5 miles from Ulsta. The ro-ro ferries to Unst and Fetlar leave from Gutcher.
Sellafirth is on the east side of the island, approximately 5 miles from Mid Yell, the main population centre on the island. In the village of Mid Yell there is a Shop with Post Office, Public Hall, Doctor’s Surgery and Leisure Centre with a swimming pool. School transport is provided by Shetland Islands Council to the Mid Yell Junior High School.
